Madeleine King Contemporary Ethereal Paintings

about
Madeleine King is an emerging artist based in Brighton and Hove, working from her studio in the heart of Brighton North Laines. She has exhibited her work in various shows in London and Brighton, selling and exhibiting her floral pieces. She is has also created several private commissions for collectors.
Her art school days were at Middlesex and Brighton University where she studied Fashion and Textiles focusing on Print design. During her placement year she worked in France, Italy, and Paris working in prestigious textile studios. Since graduating she has followed a career in the Fashion and now freelances in the fashion industry as well as rediscovering her painting practice in the past three years.
Emotive and ethereal Madeleine’s work is fascinated with distraction and distortion referencing work of the 17th century Flemish female painters. Her work focuses on how she can distort and change a flower almost making it unrecognizable. This often arises from observing how the flowers decay, often painting from still life arrangements or Plein Air with the flowers. Madeleine likes to work on Wood panels with acrylic and oil pastels creating a dreamlike ethereal mood with the materials.
Madeleine’s work is always inspired by flowers, exploring varieties by their seasonality, her current favourites are Magnolia's, Tulip's and Blossom.
Her work aims to capture the essence of flowers, their lush, layered petals, colours, tones and shapes. Their vibrant hues from soft pinks to deep reds can evoke feelings of joy, love and vitality.
Her recent work was part of ‘Sarah Arnett’s Little Picture Palace’ Best Open House in May 2025 and for Christmas December 2025 -
having her own Sauna Art Gallery!
‘Each painting evokes a feeling of hope and happiness I hope you enjoy them as much as I do painting them’

'rainy January days' series

A new series coming soon.... inspired by rainy January days, luminous colours seen in Roses and Tulips.
A nod to Spring and feeling hopeful at the start of a New Year. Spring time, tulips and vibrant colours.
These pieces aim to display how the rain seems endless in the early months of the year, the dripping paint illustrating this. All work avaliable to view at my Brighton Studio
'Delicious Dahlias' series
A series that focuses on the Dahlia - this late Summer flower, exploring the dark summer tones and beauty of this flower. A new series that will explore all the colours and shades of this vibrant flower. Jewel like colours deep purples and reds with fiery oranges.
These pieces will debut at a group POP UP at April Studio the weekend of 6th / 7th September at April's Studio on Ditchling Road, Brighton. Avalaible to see in my Brighton studio.
'poppy and peony love' series
'Poppy and Peony Love' are a new series created for Sarah Arnett’s wonderful
‘Little Picture Palace’ Open House in May.
Exploring the magic of peonies and poppies my work looks to capture the essence of these captivating flowers. Both flowers with their lush, layered petals, their vibrant hues—from soft pinks to deep reds—evoke feelings of love and vitality.
In Chinese culture, peonies are revered as the "king of flowers," representing wealth and honour. Poppies, on the other hand, carry a rich tapestry of meanings. Red poppies are emblematic of remembrance and sacrifice.
'flemish florals' series
A new series of paintings inspired by Roses, their darkness and evolution. Inspired by the Dutch masters this series explores the darkness and moody tones.
My love of Roses spans three generations, my late Grandma who loved them and summer visits to the Rose Gardens in Regents Park with my mother and young daughter.
This series explores a darker side to my work, using black as a base and observing how Roses decay and evolve.
Each painting is a snapshot of the Rose at that time and challenging me to use new tones and textures in my work.
